Peanut Butter and Fudge Brownie Recipe From Scratch

When I can help it I don’t like using a mix, so please enjoy this peanut butter and fudge brownie recipe from scratch!
I really enjoy this recipe as there is a delicious contrast between the peanut butter and fudge sections of the brownie, which is a nice change if you want something different.
Its useful to have at least 3 bowls available as this recipe requires specific mixing instructions.

INGREDIENTS (Bottom Layer)

  • 1 cup of soft butter.
  • 2 cups of sugar.
  • 4 eggs.
  • 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour.
  • 3/4 of a cup of cocoa (unsweetened).
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder.
  • 1 cup of peanut butter chips.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt.

INGREDIENTS (Middle Layer)

  • 1/3 cup of soft butter.
  • 3/4 cup of smooth peanut butter.
  • 1/3 cup of sugar.
  • 2 tablespoons of all purpose flour.
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 teaspoon of vanilla.

INGREDIENTS (frosting)

  • 3 tablespoons of butter.
  • 3 oz of chocolate (unsweetened)
  • 2 2/3 cups of powdered sugar.
  • 3/4 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  • 4 tablespoons of water.


  1. Grease your pan.  The pan needs to be approximately 13 by 9 inches.  If you like this brownies use a smaller pan.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. In the first bowl, use some of the ingredients from the first ingredients list above (bottom layer).
    1. beat sugar and butter until its well mixed.
    2. Add the eggs one at a time, and beat well after each addition.
  4. In the second bowl, use rest of the ingredients from the first ingredients list above (bottom layer).
    1. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.  Mix dry ingredients.
  5. Now slowly add the ingredients of the second bowl (dry ingredients), a bit at a time, into the first bowl (wet ingredients).  mix well at until all the dry ingredients is used.
  6. Add peanut butter chips into the above and mix well.
  7. In a third bowl, use the ingredients from the second ingredients list above (middle layer).
  8. Mix peanut butter and butter until well combined.
  9. Add sugar and flour, mix well.
  10. Add the vanilla and two eggs and mix very well.
  11. You should now have two bowls of mixed ingredients.  The chocolate portion with peanut butter chips and then the peanut butter mixture.
  12. Pour half of the chocolate portion of the mixture into the greased pan and smooth over entire bottom.
  13. Pour the peanut butter portion over the chocolate mixture.
  14. Add the rest of the chocolate to cover the peanut butter layer.
  15. Bake for about 45 minutes, and once finished let it cool completely.
  16. Now for the topping, in a saucepan over low/medium heat, melt butter and chocolate, stirring constantly.
  17. Remove from heat and add the rest of the topping ingredients (minus the water).  Mix well.
  18. Add water a bit at a time, until you get the consistency you want.
  19. You can not frost the cooled brownies and cut into squares.  Enjoy!
I hope you challenge yourself to follow this brownie recipe from scratch, its much more fun than just throwing a mix in a bowl, adding water and throwing in the oven. At least this way you know exactly what is going into your brownies!
