Quick Strawberry Shortcake Trifle Recipe

-- Advertisements --
This can be one of the quickest strawberry shortcake trifle recipes if that is your preference. There are so many parts of this desert that can be store purchased, or if you prefer the complete home made experience you can easily make everything from scratch.
This will be the quick version of the dessert for those instances where you have run out of time or maybe your main dessert didn’t come out as expected. We have all been there, so its nice to have this quick recipe up your sleeve for emergencies!

INGREDIENTS

  • Swiss roll cake (Don’t use the chocolate version)
  • Slab of milk chocolate (white or brown)
  • Dry or sweet sherry (optional) – 100ml or add more to taste.
  • Strawberries (preferably fresh, with hulls removed)
  • A second fruit is optional (blueberries, blackberries and/or bananas)
  • Instant custard or use this recipe (custard sauce)
  • Instant whipped cream or 2 cups whipping cream.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. The bottom layering is not set in stone, you can mix it up.  This is my preference.
  2. Unroll Swiss roll, cut into portions so that you can cover the bottom of your bowl.
  3. Drizzle 1/2 of the sherry over the Swiss roll so that you get even coverage.
  4. Place your fruits as the next layer.
  5. Drizzle the rest of the sherry over the fruits layer.  If you are using bananas, pour a teaspoon or two of lemon juice over then in order to prevent them from browning (you only need to do this if the trifle is going to stand for a while.
  6. Pour custard over fruit layer.  If this is the homemade version, make sure it has been cooled.
  7. Pour and smooth whipped cream over the custard layer.
  8. Take your preferred milk chocolate and grate some over the top of the cream.  I prefer brown as it provides a color contrast.  The picture above shows a white chocolate.
  9. You can place some fruit on the top layer for decoration.

EXTRA TIPS

  • Make the layers thinner and then double up, so in other words a trifle stacked on another trifle.
  • Instead of a huge bowl, prepare individual portions in a glass dessert dish, or oversize wine glass.  This way you can remove alcohol from kids desserts.  It also looks really fancy.
  • If you have the time, refrigerate the trifle for 1 to 2 hours.
